Designer Max Azria claims he always knew he'd move to America; he named his first child Michael rather than the French, Michel. Raised in Paris by an olive-oil producer and a homemaker, Azria stumbled into a love for fashion through a chance apprenticeship at the ripe age of 16. After designing and running a French line for 11 years, Azria moved to the U.S. as predicted, where he launched a successful retail chain. Influenced by the laid-back California aesthetic, Azria created BCBGMAXAZRIA in 1989, combining sleek European tailoring with the American concept of comfort he so adored.
